#SenzoMeyiwa probe: 'Suspect is lucky not to have spent the Easter weekend in police cells'

The police are about to arrest a suspect who was one of the people who were present in the house in Vosloorus when former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa was killed more than a year ago.
A policeman close to the investigation, who cannot be named as he is not allowed to talk to the media said.  According to The Sunday Independent,  a suspect has been fingered after the reconstruction of the crime scene two weeks ago and the thorough study of the initial statements of the various witnesses who were inside the house on the night Meyiwa was shot.
“The discrepancies in this particular statement by one of the eyewitnesses in the house have convinced us that no armed robbery took place that day.
“I can unfortunately not give more information, but the suspect is lucky not to have spent the Easter weekend in police cells. But we will pounce any time from today.”
The top detective did not rule out the possibility that those who lied in their statements could be arrested and charged for perjury and defeating the ends of justice.
“South Africa and the soccer fraternity will eventually have closure soon. We have a water-tight case against the suspect,” added a police source.
Meyiwa was shot on the night of October 26 at the house of the mother of his singer-cum-actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo. He was accorded an official funeral.
Two weeks ago, the Hawks and their team of experts who specialise in unsolved crimes descended on the house where they met Khumalo, her sister Zandi and a few other people who were in the house on the night Meyiwa was killed.
At the time of his murder, people in the house included Khumalo, her mother Ntombi, younger sister Zandi and her boyfriend Longwe Twala, who is musician Sello Chicco’s son. Two of Senzo’s friends were also there, as well as Khumalo’s son.
On Sunday, March 13, the Hawks and their team of experts met all the people who were in the house on the night Meyiwa was killed.
Despite repeated calls, Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi could not be reached to comment.
