Our Perfect Wedding's runaway groom was a fraudster
Just when we thought things had settled down for Our Perfect Wedding after the statutory rapist saga, along comes more controversy surrounding the latest episode of the popular reality show.
Guests and TV crew would have been forgiven for labelling Wanda Mhobo a runaway groom, as he left his bride Ratanang at the altar with no explanation. He emerged the next day, after his bride and her guests were prohibited from entering the venue which had not been paid for in full.
Read:Mhobo claimed he had been hijacked - but it has since emerged that the reason for his disappearing act was a fake payment made to the venue a day before the couple’s wedding.
He was arrested for fraud on Friday, after the owner of Ambrosia Hall Sally Slade opened a case with Midrand police when she received fake proof of payment.
"I then received an email with an attachment that purported to be a Capitec Bank proof of electronic funds transfer. When I received the proof of payment I telephoned Ambrosia Hall's bankers, Standard Bank, to ask if there was a pending credit. I gave Standard Bank all of the details on the Capitec Bank document but they could not confirm the transactions, and Capitec also failed to confirm it," she said.
Read: The DJ and photographer booked for the reception had confirmed that neither of them had been paid in full, which intensified Slade’s suspicions, TimesLive reports.
Speaking from jail, Mhobo said he had buckled under the pressure to marry Ratanang, which threw him into a downward spiral, which led him to forge the proof of payment. His wife had lost her speech and was suffering from depression as a result of the humiliating incident, he told the publication.
Viewers took to Twitter to respond to the episode, which aired on Sunday:

She's a better woman than I... That day 2 wouldn't have happened if I was the bride! #OurPerfectWedding #OPW— Boitumelo (@MissLooney) December 20, 2015
Is this really what 'strong women' should put up with? Is this love? or simply lack of/insufficient self-love? #OPW #OurPerfectWedding— Lesego Mosenyi (@LesegoViv) December 20, 2015
